Christmas day for this year has come and gone; the presents have also been ‘boxed’ away; now it is time to get down to the business of making New Year Resolutions or Goals.
Looking back at my Resolutions and Goals of years-gone-by, the ones that i have not accomplished quickly were the one that had to do with some parts of my life that i didn’t want to give up. Living below your means will become easier if you are willing to do away with cable-TV or eating-out every week etc. Making more friends will necessitate you leaving your video games at home and going out to meet real people.
It is usually not the big things that we fail at; it is small activities that lead to them that we tend to unwittingly miss out. It is the little foxes that spoil the vine. Nobody stumbles on a mountain, it is the little rocks you need to watch out for. Are your little habits keeping you from reaching your goals?
A habit, according to the dictonary, is a tendency or disposition to act in a particular way. It is an acquired behaviour pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary. Take a little ti
me in the next few days to examine yourself for habits that may have been hindering your progess over the years in one way or the other.
There are good habits and there are bad habits. I have the habit of reading for about one hour everyday – with the aim of reading at least 12 business and personal finance books every-year. I suppose that is a good habit. Exercising for at least 30minutes – 3 days a week is another one. If you have a habit of not arriving at work on time, you won’t keep that job for long. Bad time-keeping – bad habit. I’m sure you can think of some other bad one without much effort.
A bad habit can be broken and a good one cultivated in its place – if you are determined. If a habit of yours begins to affect you, your family, your finances, relationships or jobs in a negative fashion, you have an addiction. It is time to take action.
An addiction is a persistent, compulsive dependence on a behaviour or substance. If without your coffee you are going to be a monster throughout the day, you are addicted to caffeine. Every addiction (pick any) costs you money. The money you should have been using to get out of debt or build your wealth. The hours you spend in front of the TV each day could be used to write a book that will bring you success in life.
An addiction can give you instant gratification but will leave you with lifelong pain and misery. Most people think of what they are addicted to as just being part of their lifestyles – NOT!!. Unless you get rid of them you will continue to go round in circles year after year
As you are making up New Year Resolutions for next year, search yourself deeply and be determined more that ever to do away with all your goal-killing habits and all those misery-bringing addictions or you will be writing the same goals again next year.
