The last few days have been emotionally draining for me since the passing away of my father last Wednesday but in the midst of it all i still have begin making arrangement to travel to Nigeria for the funeral amongst other things.
Yesterday i decided to book for my flight in good time and to get that out of the way. I have some 31,000 airmiles that i have accumulated from other flights and the use of the Virgin Atlantic Amex credit card which i closed ages ago; so decided to use that to reduce expenses.
To my disappointment i was only allowed to use 2000 airmiles for the flight which got got me pondering on what is the use of having lots of airmiles and not being able to use them – when you need them. I had to remind myself of the reasons i stopped using the credit card itself in the first place.
You see, bonus or loyalty points, airmiles etc are attached to store and credit cards to take your eyes away from what you are spending to the points or airmiles – that is my opinion because it happened to me. The danger with any type of rewards credit card is that the lure of the reward can give some people an excuse to spend beyond their means, which they justify by looking at the points mounting up on their credit card statement. This is a false economy because the interest they end up paying on their unpaid balance from month to month easily negates the value of the points they have earned.
In the light of the above do you think air miles are still worth it? Are you are part of any airline loyalty program and have built/used up thousands of air miles in your account? Tell us your experience.
