Beware of Bogus Tax Refund Notifications

I received the email below this morning and from the first glance, though enticing, it didn’t seem right to me because the Inland revenue don’t usually contact me in this way.

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity, we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of 1527.29 GBP. Please submit the tax refund request and allow 6-9 days in order to process it.

HM Revenue & Customs

I traced the landing page that the email provided to a website in Chiang Mai (Thailand), owned by a software house  which has nothing to do with Inland Revenue at all.

It became clear to me that some unscrupulous individuals are using the hardship created by the recession to try and get people’s details for some fraudulent uses. From experience i know that you won’t get any emails from HMRC warning you that your tax return is late, your payment is overdue. You will get a letter instead.

If you get an email like this and it look ‘juicy’ to you, contact the organisation involved first before devulging your details. Do not use the link or telephone number given on the email either. You may also forward the email scams to  phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk so they can try and stop them.

By the way, another version of this bogus email may come to you entitled “Notice of Underreported Income”. Be on your guide.
