I had the opportunity of ministering in the Word at my church, New Life Bible Church this evening. I took my text from Proverbs 18:16 which says “A man’s gift shall make room for him and bring hie before great men.”
A gift is anything is something that is given without the need for compensations – if any form is compensation is involved then it becomes a trade. Another meaning meaning of a gift is “a special ability or talent from God”
We all, as unique individuals, have been given unique gifts by God with which we can accomplish our life-assignments. These gifts, however, must be developed to the extent that they will bring us before great men. Look at the athletes all around us, without too much education some of them have turn their lives around for good because their gifts are making room for them. They have the opportunities now to change their families’ financial outlook; they marry the most gorgeous women, drive whatever they desires and just seem have the best in life because they have embraced their God-given gifts and have maximised them.
Now how can an average person achieve this kind of success in his own life?
1. Perceive your gift - you have to discover for yourself the unique gift that you have been given. You need to ask yourself “What comes to me naturally?” Is it talking,listening, dancing, working with people etc
2. Perfect your gift – Our gifts are given to us as potentials; it is our duty to develop them. What do you need to do to take your gift to the next level? You may need to take a course or two, attend seminars, get a coach or a mentor. Perfecting your gift will definitely involve changing some of your old habit, relationships that are holding you back, use of time and resources.
3. Practice your gift – even while you are still perfecting your gift, you will need to seek opportunities to practice it. Bringing your gift before great men may mean using it before some small men first – afterall practice makes perfect.
Remember the story of Joseph? Dreaming was his initial gift which he developed to interpreting dreams which he in turn used to fullfil his main purpose on earth - to preserve thenation of Israel during the great famine. In the process, he became very wealthy and very powerful.
You can accomplish your assignment too by perceiving, perfecting and practicing your unique gift.
